The Greek Folk Dance

Manor Hill Greek school is proud of its long established history of teaching Greek Folk Dance as part of the curriculum. Greek Folk Dance education plays a major role in cultural identity, maintaining traditions, teaching history and of course, a source of enjoyment that attracts many pupils to our school.

Dance lessons are offered to all pupils between the ages of 4-14+ (nursery through to GCSE). Our aim is to teach dances from different regions of the Greek world including Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Epirus, Peloponnesus, the Islands, Cyprus and Asia Minor (Constantinople, Cappadocia, Ikonio, Pontus). The pupils learn the background to each dance; learn about regional costumes and music associated with the dance.

Every child in the school is offered the opportunity to perform in their year group at the Annual School Dinner and Dance and at school celebrations (yiortes).

The school is very proud of its Dance Troupe; a group of enthusiastic and talented children in dance who receive additional tuition after school hours in preparation for external performances. Over the years the dance troupe has been invited to perform at many events.  These have included national television -The Paul O’Grady Show, the Mayor’s Charity Ball, multi-cultural celebrations for various communities, fundraising events such as Cancer Research, primary and secondary schools international evenings and many more.
